This Custom Leather Jacket Start-up Creates Your Dream Jacket Starting at $150 — Here’s My Experience
Custom leather jackets always seemed like an extravagant and unattainable luxury. Where would you even begin? Who offers such a service? And would it require a financial overhaul to get a custom-designed leather jacket? Enter Mjacket, a startup based in the UAE (and allegedly the USA), offering custom leather (and wool) jackets, blazers, and coats in nearly any style, size, or colour you desire.
The Process
Mjacket connected me with a design consultant who asked if I wanted to modify one of their existing designs or create something from scratch. Since I already had several standard leather jackets, I decided to design a unique piece. I envisioned a captain’s trench coat, something warm and stylish for winter, reminiscent of Captain Haddock from Tintin.
Watson, my design consultant, and I exchanged numerous emails discussing details such as the number of buttons, a lapel button, and whether to include a belt. After narrowing it down, we settled on a leather pea coat. Watson provided four mockup designs, and we decided on a “Cowhide Dark Brown Oil Pull Up” leather, reminiscent of classic oilskins.
I was instructed to get measured by a top-notch tailor. I went to Perry Tailoring in Manhattan’s Financial District, who has worked with publications like Gentleman’s Quarterly and The New York Times. After providing my measurements, I received my custom jacket within a month.
Initial Impressions and Tailor’s Notes
I immediately took the jacket to Perry for his expert opinion. He praised the leather quality but noted the button stitching was subpar. He estimated the jacket’s value at $500 due to the thread quality on the buttons, although the jacket cost $250 from Mjacket. Despite the minor flaw, the leather was excellent.
Watson offered two options: send the jacket back to Pakistan for repairs or have Perry fix it with reimbursement from Mjacket. I opted for the latter, and Perry reinforced the buttons for $25, which Mjacket promptly reimbursed. The lining was standard quilted Bemberg, comparable to high-end brands like John Varvatos.
The Bottom Line
If you’ve always wanted a leather jacket but can’t afford the designer price, Mjacket offers a custom, affordable alternative. While it may lack the designer label, it
